Type 1: Donated Historical Items

The Society welcomes a variety of historical items such as artifacts, documents, photographs, and books. Artifacts include but are not limited to business and household items, clothing, and tools. Documents consist of certificates of birth, marriage, and death in addition to records from businesses, organizations, and schools. Photographs depict individuals, buildings, activities, and events to name just a few categories. Books reflect the people, places, and things associated with the mission area.

To remain true to its purpose, all donated historical items are considered for accessioning based upon the Palmerton Area Historical Society’s Mission Statement which states:

The mission of the Palmerton Area Historical Society is to create awareness, appreciation, pride and respect for the people and rich heritage of the towns of Palmerton and Bowmanstown and Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships; to collect and preserve relevant materials; and to educate the general public through exhibits, publications and programs.

Once accessioned, each item is preserved, and stored in the archives, unless temporarily relocated for use in an exhibit or display. These exhibits and displays serve as teaching tools, and as a means of attracting tourists and other visitors to the Heritage Center. Moreover, they afford an opportunity for the public to enjoy interesting, historically significant items that might never have been seen.

Type 2: Monetary Donations

Monetary donations are needed by the Palmerton Area Historical Society to maintain the facilities and to fund activities at The Heritage Center, The Little White Church, and the Archives. For example, when a new exhibit opens in the feature room at the Heritage Center, light refreshments and entertainment befitting the new display are provided. Funds are also used to defray expenses such as decorations, program handouts, and equipment incurred in presenting the annual ecumenical Christmas service in the Little White Church. At the archives, there is a constant need to replenish the supplies and materials necessary to continue the work of preserving the collection.
