| Description |
Religion was important to the early settlers of the Palmerton Area as evidenced by the number and variety of denominational churches such as the First United Church of Christ, the Holy Trinity Lutheran, the Sacred Heart, St. John's Episcopal, SS Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic, St. Vladimir's Byzantine Ukrainian Rite Catholic, and the Living Hope Lighthouse, just to name a few in Palmerton.
Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Trinity Lutheran and Faith Alive United Methodist can be found in Bowmanstown.
The United Church of Christ and the Evangelical Lutheran Church are located in the village of Trachsville, in Towamensing Township. Both of these congregations originated from the former Jerusalem Union Church. A union church was comprised of a Lutheran and a Reformed congregation. Both shared the church facility on a Sunday but at different times of the day. At one point in time, all Reformed churches became known as the United Church of Christ. When the two congregations of the union church divided, The United Church of Christ remained in the original structure and the Lutherans built their own Evangelical Lutheran Church across the street.
St. John's Towamensing Lutheran Church on Fireline Road was founded in 1798, and is one of the oldest churches in Carbon County. It originally formed as a result of the union between the United Church of Christ (Reformed) and the Lutheran congregations. In 1976, the union church was dissolved. The Lutheran congregation retained the building on Fireline Road, but the United Church of Christ (Reformed) moved to 891 Columbia Avenue and became St. John's United Church of Christ.
