In conjunction with the birthday celebration, the new display in the feature room at the Heritage Center traces the "History of the Historical Society". It includes the history of the four sites maintained by the society and presents examples of the various public events which have been sponsored by the society.

The Palmerton Area Historical is not only involved in self-sponsored activities, programs, and events, but also in those directed by the local communities.

Below you will find examples of the Society's involvement throughout the community.

AUCTION

On Saturday May 20, 2006, the Palmerton Area Historical Society hosted an Antiques and Collectibles Auction at the Palmerton Hospital Community Services Center at Second Street and Franklin Avenue in Palmerton, PA.

Mr. Peter Kern, PAHS business manager, performed the duties of the auctioneer as he presented a variety of items for bid. The estate items for sale included a variety of crystal pieces, pressed- and cut-glass objects, and paintings. A collection of Sterling Silver bells were of particular interest to the crowd.

The Auction was a great success; a good time was had by the bidders and the Society realized a handsome profit.

BOOTH

As a means of promoting its "Message and Mission," the Palmerton Area Historical Society has transported its Travelling-Covered-Bridge-Booth to a variety of community events over the years. Every year the PAHS Booth is open for business at the Palmerton Community Festival in the Borough Park on Delaware Avenue. Festival-goers can purchase sweat shirts, tee shirts, caps, totes, and a variety of other articles as a memento of the area.

The Travelling-Covered-Bridge-Booth was modeled in part after the covered bridge at Little Gap in Lower Towamensing Township. Mr. Larry Yeakel, founder of the society, supervised a group of twelve members of the Lehigh Gap Historical Society (now the Palmerton Area Historical Society) as they painstakingly completed the project in approximately three weeks.

The "Booth" is designed to fit on a trailer which enables it to be towed by a pick-up truck and is wired for lighting and outlets wherever electricity is available. Its wooden construction is fitted with doors at one end of the trailer and awning-style windows installed in booth sides both sides. These doors and windows swing open to reveal shelving that displays the merchandise for sale.

This year the Palmerton Community Festival will be held September 11th, 12th, and 13th … stop by and say "Hello."

BUS TOURS:

In 1998, the PAHS conducted group bus tours in conjunction with the year-long celebration of Palmerton's Centennial Celebration. PAHS made arrangements with a local bus company to provide transportation while on-board guides from the Society conducted the tours. Each tour lasted approximately 1 ½ hours and featured a running narration that emphasized the historic details about the town, its architecture, and its various cultures.

In 2000, back by popular demand, this tour was repeated as part of the Heritage Day celebration held in the park and sponsored by the Palmerton Area Historical Society.

FIRST FRIDAYS

In 2008, in an effort to promote awareness of the Palmerton Area Heritage Center the PAHS participated in Palmerton's First Fridays. Along with community merchants, the Heritage Center collected "coupons" from First Friday Flyers. A winner was drawn from the combined coupons and became eligible for "Palmerton Bucks" which were then redeemable at the merchant listed on the winning coupon.

QUILT RAFFLE

In 2006, the PAHS held a Quilt Raffle as a fundraiser for the Palmerton Area Heritage Center. The prize was a handmade quilt donated by Marlene Bollinger, Barbara Serfass Fisher, and Nancy Serfass Costenbader. Its pattern was the colorful log cabin design and it measured 118" x 86".

Tickets were sold at $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. The drawing was held on June 10th to commemorate the first anniversary of the opening of the Heritage Center. The winner with the lucky ticket was Society member and Heritage Center volunteer, Betty Steigerwalt. When she received the phone call notifying her that she was the winner, she had to stop her jelly making and come to the center for a photo shoot and to claim her prize.

YARD SALE

In 2006, the PAHS held a yard sale at the Little White Church. Many items for sale were gathered from the Robing room, the Choir corner, the basement storage area, and Narthex of the Church. However, additional items were also donated by Society members and friends.

Volunteers worked the day before to set-up tables and returned Saturday morning before the before the early shoppers arrived. Even though the weather was extremely hot, the sale produced a good turn out and made a substantial profit for the Society.
