Description
The Palmerton Area Heritage Center, under the direction of the Palmerton Area Historical Society, regularly features temporary exhibits in the feature room of the Heritage Center at 410 Delaware Avenue Palmerton, PA. For each exhibit, the PAHS typically offers some type of refreshment, entertainment, or activity to accompany the grand opening.

For Example:

2006 EXHIBIT OPENING: "SLOVAK / UKRAINIAN ETHNIC CLOTHING DISPLAY"

In honor of the immigrants who settled in and developed the area, the PAHS Heritage Center showcased a Slovak and Ukrainian Ethnic Clothing Display in April 2006 as the first of several cultural exhibits to be presented over the course of several months. Those ethnic exhibits that followed included the Portuguese, the Polish, the Mexican, and the Pennsylvania Dutch cultures.
The first display featured women's shoes, boots, hats, scarves, shalls, blouses, skirts, and dresses, along with men's shoes, a hat, a shirt, and a vest. In addition to the clothing, the exhibit also displayed personal artifacts and a pysanky display - Ukrainian Easter Eggs.

To create an authentic atmosphere, the Society invited the KAZKA Ukrainian Folk Ensemble to perform both traditional and contemporary Ukrainian folk songs in the backyard of the Center while the public enjoyed light refreshments on the patio.

2008 EXHIBIT OPENING: "TEA AND SCONES WITH JAM AND JELLY"

In January 2008, the PAHS Heritage Center displayed a retrospective exhibit of Irving A. Jelly. Prints and original engravings in the feature room at the Palmerton Area Heritage Center. The exhibit was entitled "Tea and Scones with Jam and Jelly" and featured prints never before seen by the public. To "kick off" the opening of the exhibit, the public was invited to partake of more than thirty examples of Jelly's work along with tea and scones served on a silver tea service.

This exhibit presented some of the most familiar images of the Palmerton community created by the talented hands of Irving A. Jelly. Born in Newark, New Jersey on January 3, 1894 Jelly moved to Palmerton in 1908 at the age of 14 to begin working at the New Jersey Zinc Company as an apprentice draftsman.

During his residency in Palmerton, as a hobby, Jelly generated renderings of churches, of bridges, and of pastoral scenes from throughout the area. He then engraved these images onto plates to produce his prints on a crude hand press in his attic.

While his prints have been reproduced by the hundreds, there are few residents in Palmerton who remember the man or know how he came to acquire his skills. Jelly passed away suddenly on the evening of March 18, 1955, shortly after returning home from a Palmerton Camera Club meeting.
