There are two types of meetings held by the Palmerton Area Historical Society.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MEETING TYPE 1: GENERAL MEETINGS
Meetings for the general membership are held on the second Monday of each month in the Knight's Gallery on the second floor of the Palmerton Area Library. A brief business meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. and is followed by a different program each month. The programs are varied and include audience participation, presentations by members and outside speakers, videos and trips. The public is also welcome to attend these meetings.
~~~ EXAMPLES OF PAST PROGRAMS
~~~~~~ SHOW 'N TELL
January is traditionally Show 'n Tell month. This popular program involves audience participation and is open to society members as well as the public. Everyone is encouraged to bring one item to share that is historic, unusual, or even difficult to identify. Despite being puzzled at times, this program always proves to be interesting and fun for everyone.
~~~~~~ TRIPS
In general, all trips conducted by the PAHS typically take place during the summer season due to the warmer weather. These trips are generally scheduled on the second Monday of each month as part of the General Meeting. Sites visited in the past include Asa Packer Mansion, the Mauch Chunk Museum, and the Old Jail all in Jim Thorpe, PA, as well as the former White Christmas Tree Farm and Geology Garden. The Society introduced the "Mystery Trip" format in 2003; this trip conceals the journey's end until arrival at the destination.
In August of 2003, Society members and friends participated in a "Mystery Trip" to the Carriage House and Museum belonging to Joe and Barbara Tetz. The group car-pooled from the parking lot across from Hager's Furniture Store in Palmerton, PA to New Tripoli, PA.
In June of 2004, Society members and friends participated in a trip to The Lehigh Gap Nature Center located in Lehigh Gap, PA. At the time it was known as the Wildlife Information Center.
In 2005, Society members and friends participated in a "Mystery Trip" to Ironton, PA. Walter and Jane Grove welcomed everyone by giving them rides around the area in his antique automobiles.
In 2006, Society members and friends participated in a "Mystery Trip" to the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary on Route 903 north of Jim Thorpe, PA. The adventure was a hands-on experience.
In 2008, Society members and friends participated in a "Mystery Trip" to New Tripoli, PA to visit the Lynn-Heidelberg Historical Society's reconstructed Zeisloff House and Fort Everett.
In May 2009, Society members and friends had the privilege of visiting St. George's Russian Orthodox Church on Church Street in Palmerton, PA. Mr. Peter Kochmaruk, one of the few remaining members of the congregation, was the host. Arch Priest Father Vincent Saverino, from Philadelphia, was the guest speaker.
In June 2009, Society members and friends participated in a trip to the Lehigh Township Historical Society's Museum at the restored Trading Post Building at the former Indian Trail Park at Pennsville, PA.
Given the popularity of these trips, the Society plans to continue scheduling them in the future.
